0 | Welcome to the strange land of "MOONSTONE". A text adventure written by Tony Longworth for Page 6 Magazine. Written in the year of 1987. This piece of software belongs to the public domain and thus, holds no copyright. Hello, I (the advanced Atari computer) will be your guide in this realm, and you can command me using one or two words, for example GET SWORD or LOOK or INVENTORY or DROP SHOVEL. I wish you luck in your quest and hope you will find enjoyment and self satisfaction in this adventure game, and if you find the authors address then you could write to him and and tell him what you thought. |
1 | Merlins Cave I am standing in a large, damp, creepy cave. Many roughly built cabinets line the cave walls, containing strange coloured potions. Merlin the wizard is here. He is busily working on his latest spell which can control the sun and the moon. An exit leads east. |
2 | Forest Path I am on a winding forest path. Thick trees line the north and south side of the path. Leaves blow about the ground in the gentle breeze. The path continues to the east, and leads into a dark cave to the west. |
3 | Forest Path I am on a winding forest path. The trees seem to thin out just here. Exits are to the east and west. |
4 | Dense Forest I am in a dense part of the forest. Most of the sunlight has been restricted from entering this area by the thick green leaves. Strange rustlings in the undergrowth put me all on edge. A path leads back into the forest to the west, and a track leads out of the forest to the north. |
5 | Southern Side of Rope Bridge I am standing at the southern side of a large, swaying rope bridge, spanning across a large, deep canyon. A small bird is here. The bridge is to the north and a forest lies to the south. |
6 | On Swaying Rope Bridge I am cautiously walking across a swaying rope bridge. Looking far below into the canyon makes you feel dizzy. The rope bridge leads north and south. |
7 | Northern Side of Rope Bridge I am at the northern side of a rope bridge, in a small dip in the land. An old wooden sign is here. To the south is the bridge, and exits lead up out of the dip to the east and west. |
8 | Charred Field I am in a large, charred field. A sleeping dragon lies here, with smoke drifting out from his nostrils. Blackened armoured skeletons are scattered around the field. It looks like these poor adventurers must have once woke the dragon from it's sleep. Exits lead east and west. |
9 | Mountain Pass I am on a winding, grassy mountain pass. I can hear loud wails of anger from the north. The path continues north to the top of the mountain, and east to the base of the mountain. |
10 | Enchanted Woodland I am in an mystical, enchanted woodland. The trees seem to sparkle, and the soft ground underfoot seems to be carpeted. A hobbit hole is to the east, and another exit leads west. |
11 | Comfy Hobbit Hole I am in a comfy, little hobbit hole. This is the main living area of the hobbit, and is very tastefully furnished and decorated. The bedroom is to the south, and the front door is to the west. |
12 | Comfy Hobbit Hole (Bedroom) This is the bedroom of the hobbit, which has also been very tastefully decorated and furnished. An exits leads north. |
13 | Top of Mountain I am at the top of the mountain. A large, ugly hill troll is here, wielding a very large club. Quite a few dead adventurers lay around the troll. Seems like he's not too keen on adventurers. Exits lead east and south. |
14 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. |
15 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. |

22 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. |
23 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. I suddenly feel that the world is rising, but then I realise that I am sinking into the swamp. Better get out of here pretty quickly!!! |
24 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. I notice a strange mist gathering around my feet, and before I can do anything, it begins rapidly rising towards my head. I think we should leave this location in a great hurry. |
25 | Castle Gates I am standing in front of large, open castle gates. Two guards stand either side of the gates. Above the wall I can see the castle towering into the sky. A small path leads back into the swamp to the south and the castle is to the north. |
26 | Castle Courtyard I am standing in a large courtyard. A beautiful, shining fountain sits in the centre of the courtyard. Silver water splashes into the base of the fountain. A sturdy, locked door is in the north wall, and open gates are to the south. |
27 | Complete Darkness I am standing in complete darkness. Cobwebs brush past my face and a strange noise keeps breaking the eerie silence. It sounds a bit like someone dragging chains across a stone floor. |
28 | Nowhere I seem to no longer exist in this mystical dimension (at least I think I no longer exist). Thus, it seems a bit pointless to continue this adventure unless you manage to overcome this obstacle. |
29 | Swampland I am walking across dangerous swampland. Exits lead north, northeast, east, southeast, south, southwest, west and northwest. |

0 | The sword is badly rusted and the blade is not quite straight. |
1 | The twig crumbles to dust. |
2 | It is a beautiful, yellow rose with a mystic scent. |
3 | It is pink and has the word "BILBO" sewn onto it in red cotton. |
4 | I has the words, "Presto's Magical Gadgets Inc." inscribed on it. |
5 | It glows with a faint eerie blue light. |
6 | The crumpled piece of paper has something written on it. |
7 | It says, "Write to the author and tell him what you think: Tony Longworth, 13 Greenfield Road, Little Sutton, South Wirral, Cheshire, L66 1PE." |
8 | I can see nothing of great importance. |
9 | I've found something. |
10 | I've just woke the dragon from it's peaceful slumber. He's not too pleased to see me. He rises high above me and with a blast of firey breath, makes me into a dragon burger....I am dead. |
11 | The hill troll pounces on me and clobbers me with his club....I am dead. |
12 | A friendly hobbit is here. He asks, "Have you seen my handkerchief anywhere ?", and then explains, "I'm going off on an adventure with some friends to find some treasure, and I cannot go without my handkerchief." He scurries around his home in search of the missing handkerchief. |
13 | The hobbit takes his handkerchief. He says, "Thank you kind sir, I can now go off on my adventure in search of the treasure. If you are ever passing my home then do call in for a cup of tea." He runs into his bedroom, puts on his jacket and then rushes out of his home in search of treasure. |
14 | The hill troll starts to dance round me and giggles to itself. This is extremely strange behaviour for such a violent creature. It seems as if the troll likes the flower. |
15 | The guards throw me out of the castle and say, "The only way that you can get into the castle, is by having the Kings permission." |
16 | Merlin says with a smile, "Find me the MOONSTONE, and I will make you the chief wizard of the land." |
17 | The water is sparklingly clear. |
18 | The water is cool and refreshing. My vision begins to blur. My legs go all weak. I close my eyes, and then everything seems to return to normal. |
19 | If I think therefore I must exist. Welcome back to reality. |
20 | Merlin says, "Well done, you've found the MOONSTONE. I will now promote you to chief wizard of these lands." He wiggles his fingers and mutters some magic words and suddenly you are transformed into a wizard complete with the flowing purple robes and magic wand. You spend many a day casting mystic spells on poor, unsuspecting adventurers and live happily ever after. Congratulations on completing MOONSTONE. I hope you have enjoyed this adventure and will continue to enjoy the future adventures that I write. If you have written any adventures then why not send them to me and I will send you one of my new adventures. |
21 | They are fluffy white hobbit slippers. |
22 | I am trying my best. |
23 | Okay. There is a blinding flash accompanied by a roll of thunder and then everything returns to darkness and silence. |
24 | If merlin heard you saying such things then he would surely cut out your tongue. |
25 | If your really stuck then try sending an s.a.e. to the author and maybe he can help you. |
26 | I can see that you're really stuck. |
27 | Remembering the law of the land, you decide not to do it (after all, you do want to survive and become a wizard). |
28 | As I jump off, I notice a fellow adventurer stroll across the bridge. He sees me and says, "Don't despair, I'll help you in your quest." But it's too late, as I plummet to the jagged rocks below....It seems that I did not quite survive. The adventurer finds his way down to the bottom of the canyon and pinches all my belongings - a typical adventurer - but as he reaches the top of the canyon, he is flattened by a herd of stampeding camels (serves him right), but there seems to be no logical explanation to why there was a herd of stampeding camels in this adventure. Anyway, this still means that I am dead. |
29 | Wheeee!!!!!! That sure was fun. It appears that we have a real experienced adventurer playing this game (?) |
30 | Merlin is dressed in purple robes, and has long grey hair and a long grey beard. He's about 500 years old and most people think he's going a bit funny in his old age. It makes me think whether the MOONSTONE really exists. |
31 | The hobbit is about 4 foot tall and has extremely large feet. He is wearing a pair of tweed trousers and a white silk shirt. He seems to be looking for something. |
32 | The dragon is about 20 foot long and is covered in green scales. At the moment he is peacefully asleep and let's just hope he stays that way. |
33 | The troll is very ugly. He has dark green skin which is covered in horrible black warts. He is carrying a large blunt weapon in his right hand. I better not get him angry. |
34 | The two guards are armed with long pikes and are armoured from head to toe. They are here to stop unwanted visitors entering the castle. |
35 | As I go to blow my nose on the handkerchief, the hobbit runs up to me, snatches his handkerchief back, and storms off in a fit of rage. |
36 | The scent of the flower is a little too strong for me, as my head has just blown up.......leaving me obviously dead. |
37 | A dwarf runs out from round a corner, sees you, draws his knife and throws it at you. The knife misses, and the dwarf curses, retrieves the knife, and runs off. |
38 | A wizard appears in a puff of red smoke. He waves his magic wand, mutters some magic words and BANG....the wand explodes, leaving the wizard covered in a thick layer of black soot. The wizard explains, "I have never mastered that damn spell!". He then vanishes in a puff of grey smog. |
39 | A fellow adventurer strolls past. He is carrying a brass lantern, a large shining sword, and a map, and he is wearing a suit of plated armour. He seems to be lost. He stares at the map and then asks me, "Could you tell me the way to Festeron ?". I reply, "No! I've never heard of the place, sorry.". He shrugs his shoulders and wanders off. As he disappears out of sight, I start to remember being told about stories from a land called Festeron, but it is too late as the adventurer is gone. |
40 | Time passes..... |
41 | Nothing extremely important happens. |
42 | Okay. My spirit drifts off from my body and into another time. I am in someones bedroom. A computer desk is here containing an Atari 130xe Computer, a 1050 disk drive, a Brother printer and a television. A programmer sits at the desk looking blankly at the screen. He sees me and looks rather startled. He says, "What are you doing here ? Your supposed to be in MOONSTONE." He quickly turns to his computer and types a special commmand. You are returned to MOONSTONE. |
43 | You have found the magic words in this adventure but the words don't seem to do anything special. |
44 | The sign is made out of wood, and points to the west. There is some writing on the sign. |
45 | The sign reads, "Quiet Please, Sleeping Dragon!" |
46 | The toxic gas chokes me to death. |
47 | I sink and drown in the swamp. |
48 | The bird has beautifully coloured plumage, but looks rather unhappy. |
49 | The bird is not hungry. It is just pining for the fjords. |
