Hampstead

Hampstead was written by Trevor Leve and Peter Jones and released by Melbourne House in 1984. It is a satirical look at social mobility and social climbing, frequently referencing the British 'yuppie' culture of the 1980s. There are many things referenced that only really make sense if you lived in, or are knowlegable of, 1980s Britain. Stylistically, it has some unusual conventions, one of the most confusing being that you have to use the command 'redescribe' or 'r' to redescribe the current location, rather than 'look'. There are also a number of ways of getting the game into an unwinnable state without the game actually ending.

Map
This map splits reasonably nicely into two sections, the first being the area around your home. The locations highlighted in blue are the indoor locations where you cannot take your bike. The locations highlighted in yellow are the ones in which you will need a form of transport (bike or car) to avoid being mugged. Note that when in the industrial estate area, going in any direction aside from the ones shown on the map will leave you in the same location. The second section is around the City of London, reached after taking a train to Waterloo station. The locations highlighted in yellow are the ones in which you will need a form of transport to avoid being mugged. Note that when in the Covent garden area, going in any direction aside from the ones shown on the map will leave you in the same location.

0 //////////////////////// / / / WELCOME TO HAMPSTEAD / / / ////////////////////////
1 The aim of the game is to attain HAMPSTEAD, not just to reach it.
2 You start of at the very bottom of the social ladder, your aim is to get to the top - by any means! It is Thursday and time for you to sign on. But first make sure you're decent!
3You are in the lounge of a smelly council flat somewhere in north west London.
4You are in your sickly orange painted bedroom. The walls are alive with fungus. Between the floorboards the occasional mushroom sprouts through.
5You are in your Bathroom. A cracked washbasin contains the remains of last night's Chicken Vindaloo and chips.... Not a pretty sight!
6From the pile of dirty plates and heap of foil takeaway cartons upon the table, I assume this must be your disgusting "kitchen".
7Your back yard.
8You are inside the shed. The walls are lined with faded girlie pin-ups.
9You are in narrow street. All around you is an endless grey desert of council tower blocks. You can also see a signpost pointing east to HAMPSTEAD
10You are in the social security office,a sadly familiar sight. A slowly moving queue shuffles towards the only working clerk.
11A dingy high street.
12You are at the main entrance of a labyrinthine industrial estate An evil looking cloud of yellow smog hangs overhead. Your ears are assaulted with the clanging of hammers and the high-pitched whine of Japanese built machines. Depressing isn't it?
13You are in the midst of a large industrial estate. Roads lead in all directions.
14You are in the JOBCENTRE with its racks of encouraging little job "opportunities"
15You are at the seedy end of the high street, with its boarded up shop fronts and its marauding gangs of traffic wardens.
16The "Turf Accountants"....A very familiar sight to the likes of you.The manager escorts you to your usual stool by the T.V.
17You are in the Post Office. A young Pakistani boy smiles helpfully from behind the wire grille.
18The Oxfam Shop. You see a jumble of useless and overpriced items that no one in their right mind would want.
19You are in a small electrical shop.
20The main road. Juggernauts thunder up and down, causing small pieces of masonry to fall from nearby buildings. To the north is a one-way street
21You are at the end of the High Street, at the junction with the Main Road. To the east you see Hampstead Heath. A signpost points south to the Station.
22The Main Road.
23The south end of the Main Road. It's similar in many ways to the rest of the Main Road.
24You are outside the Station.
25You follow a winding path among the trees to a little park bench You are still on Hampstead Heath
26You are in the middle of a wood on Hampstead Heath. To the east glows the Promised Land of HAMPSTEAD
27You are on Hampstead Heath. Isn't it a lovely day !
28The Newsagent. On the top shelf, out of the reach of children, are several filthy publications.
29The Railway Station. Someone with a foreign accent is announcing train arrivals over the distorted tannoy system. You also see a ticket office

37You are on PLATFORM 3 for KINGS CROSS
38You are on a train full of commuters heading towards the City.
39You are on a train heading for Richmond.
40You are on a train heading for Kings Cross. The carriage seats have been slashed repeatedly, even in the places where they have been repaired in the past. A loathsome crew of soccer hooligans swing from the luggage racks, and amuse themselves by throwing passengers out of the window into the paths of oncoming trains.
41You are at Waterloo Station. The bus stops are to the north.
42You have reached Richmond, the Hampstead of the south, a golden oasis in the sands of suburbia. The little cobbled alleys, their green-tinted bay-windowed trinket shops, the murmur of pleasure boats as they cruise by quaint waterside inns...... Ah yes...this is the life! You are seduced by this near- perfect replica of Hampstead. You no longer have the will to attain your real goal.
43You are at a bus stop outside Waterloo station.
44You are in a hamburger restaurant staffed by a variety of middle-eastern races. They relish the opportunity of serving their enemies amongst the customers.
45A busy shopping street in the heart of London's West End. Drunks, pimps and tourists rub shoulders with pickpockets, office workers and shop assistants. A suffocating stench of diesel fumes fills the air.
46You have entered the office of a well known estate agent. There you see a display with descriptions of several desirable properties.
47You are at a cocktail party in your honour. Amongst the guests are: Janet Street-Porter, David Bailey, Paula Yates, Mark Thatcher, Keith Harris and Orville.

51A little wine bar decorated in the style of an Icelandic fishing trawler. The waitresses throw fish to the assembled advertising men.
52You are in a modern go-ahead young advertising agency. Middle aged men dressed as teenagers argue bitterly over the correct colour of a piece of string.
53You are in an art gallery. There is an exhibition of early Duchamp pieces - an inverted urinal entitled 'Fountain', a bottle rack entitled 'Bottle Rack' and a lathe retaining bracket (untitled).
54You are in Regent Street, where the better class of people shop.
55You are on the premises of a discreet gentlemen's outfitters.
56You are in Covent Garden Piazza. The entire staff of Time Out are engaged in a tiresome attempt at feminist street theatre, to the bafflement of passing tourists.
57A chic little Albanian bistro. Waiters serve dried meats and lentils covered in a variety of mouth-searing sauces. A blackboard describes the "Dish-of-the-day" to be Mutton a la Vesuvius.

59You are at the western end of Oxford Street. Further west, roads stretch in the direction of HAMPSTEAD

64You are in a Gentleman's Club reserved exclusively for Old Wykehamists. There is silence but for the sound of a ticking clock. Several old gentlemen recline in leather chairs, their faces obscured by copies of the Daily Telegraph.
65You are in the company boardroom
66You are in your new office. There is a large leather-topped mahogany desk, with some paper work upon it.

1 That sort of language is entirely unacceptable in HAMPSTEAD
2It's too heavy to lift...
3Lucky you...It's just your size.
4ugh............. no ketchup!
5 You have been arrested for indecent exposure! You will never attain HAMPSTEAD with a criminal record.
6You have been muggged.A nasty gang of thugs have kicked your head in... You will never achieve HAMPSTEAD without transport.
7Need help? Phone the Samaritans.
8 The intercom warbles. Sir Lionel's secretary tells you that he wants to see you in his office.
9 You have reached the desk. The clerk takes your UB40 and offers you a GIRO CHEQUE.
10You won't get dole without a UB40.
11 Time passes...
12You can't put your tweed jacket and trousers on over your tracksuit - stupid!
13The dogs have broken into a thousand tiny pieces.Clumsy, aren't you?
14 ******************************** * * * CONGRATULATIONS * * * ******************************** As you and Pippa amble into Hampstead, the residents realise that you belong here. With your tracksuit on, and pushing your faithful bike - who but fellow residents would realise that you have a received a knighthood? As you relax in your new cottage - you turn on the T.V.- put up your feet - and watch 3.2.1.... in style !
15 BIKES ARE NOT ALLOWED IN HERE !
16You're getting the hang of HAMPSTEAD quite quickly..
17 There are no jobs available for the likes of you...
18 In fact there aren't any jobs at all!
19You see an interesting article by Justin Perrier... In my opinion structuralist theory takes no account of the functional minimalism proposed by Hofner. Indeed, one might almost give credence to the notion of a bilateral system of ethics covering the entire genre....
20That's cheating...
21 It costs `20 - cash only.
22There are three platforms. ========================== PLATFORM 1 (SE) for WATERLOO PLATFORM 2 (S) for RICHMOND PLATFORM 3 (SW) for KINGS CROSS
23 First the good news: You have emerged from the tunnel Now the bad news: You are suddenly alone with the hooligans!
24 You emerge from another tunnel. The only part of your body still in the carriage is your feet. And even they are now being struck repeatedly with a fire extinguisher.
25Sorry. That wasn't a tunnel. YOU ARE DEAD
26
27A train arrives.
28A man carrying a copy of ART & ANTIQUES looks into your carriage. You notice at once that he is wearing a Wykehamist tie. After a few moments he proffers his CALLING CARD
29A man carrying a copy of ART & ANTIQUES looks into your carriage. He takes one look at your clothes and possessions and walks disdainfully by...
30 Justin Perrier - EDITOR Art & Antiques. 01-431-9999
31Justin expresses interest in something you have with you, and wonders whether you would be prepared to exchange it for something of his.
32Justin accepts your gift with thanks. However, this is not what he wished to exchange.
33 That's it!! Justin is just crazy about the functional minimalism of your lathe retaining bracket, which he has mistaken for an early Duchamp. He accepts it eagerly, but tells you he is rather short of cash. He begs you to accept his treasured Wykehamist tie in exchange. Justin bids you goodbye and leaves the carriage.
34 Before you set off for the City in search of wealth, fame and Hampstead, there's something you should know. Your best course of action is to board the train back to north-west London.
35 You are on a train heading back to North-West London.
36 The train stops and you get out.
37 The ticket inspector sees you have no ticket. He calls the police. You will never attain Hampstead with a criminal record - your attempt has been terminated.
38 A bus arrives.
39 The bus is taking you to a Shopping street in the West End.
40A particular property catches your eye... For `100,000 you could purchase: A Grade II listed cottage with a view of Hampstead Heath.
41You are thrown off the bus - where is your travel pass?
42How do you intend to pay? You appear to have no money.
43 Bear in mind - you are now masquerading as Justin Perrier.
44 The man now realises who you are - or rather, who you pretend to be. Winking and pointing to your tie, he asks if you would be interested in a nice little banking job which has just come up.
45You are obviously a fraud. You have been thrown out!
46 An assistant suggests politely that "Sir" might wish to purchase a new business suit.
47 The assistant takes "Sir's" old tweed jacket and trousers and assures you that he will dispose of them.
48 As he dashes off a letter of reference, he tells you that the merchant bank is at the far end of High Holborn, and you should ask for Sir Lionel Thrumm.
49 You feel a friendly hand on your shoulder, and a voice asks you your name.
50 That was the chance of a lifetime - and you blew it!
51 There is a memo on the desk.
52 FIND IT YOURSELF
53(No entry)
54Your back gate closes permanently behind you...
55 Sorry - you lost again.
56 "Through work we become ill" (Anon)
57You see A CONFIDENTIAL REPORT
58 MEMORANDUM From: Managing Director To : All Board Members Subject:Wages and conditions on the San Paulo plantation. At the next board meeting we must decide upon our position on the question of the above. I hereby give notice of my intention to recommend no reduction in standards or wages since this could result in adverse publicity, although it would increase our overheads in real terms.
59 CONFIDENTIAL REPORT Prepared for: Sir L Thrumm Subject: Wages in San Paulo OPTIONS: (1) Higher wages will result in a profitability of less than total net returns. (2) Static wages will not help in overcoming costs in real terms. (3) Lower wages will ensure the project's viability
60You find A STURDY SCREWDRIVER
61 The receptionist accepts your letter of reference. She tells you Sir Lionel's office is on the first floor, and he is expecting you.
62 Sir Lionel rises to greet you. He welcomes you aboard, and informs you of an imminent board meeting. He suggests you cast your eye over the paperwork you will find in your office.
63The intercom warbles. Sir Lionel's secretary tells you that the board meeting is about to start.
64 You see a number of well-fed faces around a long oak conference table. The Managing Director greets you amiably. The first item on the agenda is a vote on the San Paulo question Please vote for Option 1, 2 or 3
65 Sir Lionel is alone with you after the board meeting. He is looking rather unhappy about something. Before leaving he tells you your company car is parked below in the underground car park.
66 You have reached HAMPSTEAD But you have not attained it
67 You have jumped the queue - but you have landed on top of the clerk. He advises to wait your turn like everyone else.
68 Sir Lionel is alone with you after the meeting. He is looking very pleased. He is impressed that you read all the relevant information before voting. To celebrate he invites you to a cocktail party in Covent Garden. He leaves your bonus on the boardroom table, and informs you that your company car is below in the underground car park.
69 You have driven through the front of the building !!! How can you be so stupid?
70 It's locked.
71 Hard luck - they're out of reach
72Your clothing has become entangled in the bicycle chain. You have been catapulted over the handlebars into the path of an oncoming car. YOU ARE DEAD
73 Pippa considers your offer...
74 She accepts.
75She refuses. You have neither the style nor the possessions to keep her in the manner to which she is accustomed.
76OK.
77 You can also see the familiar figure of Justin Perrier....
78 Honesty is not always the best policy...
79 ...and he can see you!
80 But you are masquerading as Justin Perrier.
81 You have been exposed as another art critic fraud!
82(No entry)
83 YOU WILL NEVER ATTAIN HAMPSTEAD WITH BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS. YOUR ATTEMPT HAS BEEN TERMINATED
84 You can see a fire escape leading down the outside of the cinema.
85 You stumble around in the dark, tripping over outstretched feet.
86 By the way, while you were blundering around in the cinema your pockets may have been picked.
87 You order a three-quarter pound triple cheese with bacon, dill pickle, tomato, lettuce, onion and Bar-B-Q sauce, and a side order of fries.
88 You suddenly feel ravenous.
89 You don't feel hungry any more.
90 Now you just feel sick.
91 *** HAVE A NICE DAY ***
92 Pippa insists that you come to meet her father, whose name is Lord Fish, but whom everyone refers to as "Chubby". She adds that Chubby is frightfully important in the government, and a political rival to Sir Lionel Thrumm.
93 You have driven your company car through the elaborate stained glass porch and into the study. Bricks, mortar, books, broken glass and furniture cover the car. Lord Fish is speechless.
94 Your reckless driving has not impressed the Hampstead locals. You have driven over and torn up the beutifully landscaped path- ways of Hampstead Heath.
95 Your car has jammed itself into the narrow alley. A policeman looks on and is taking a note of your licence number... You will never attain HAMPSTEAD with a criminal record.
96 The door is opened by Pilgrim - the household butler - who enquires after the nature of your business.
97 Pilgrim informs you that no one is at home. He bids you good day and closes the door.
98 Pilgrim invites you in.
99 Chubby is writing his memoirs (and rewriting history) as he sits at his green leather- topped desk. He greets you cordially and, after some initial pleasantries, asks what your intentions are towards his daughter.
100 Satisfied with your apparent integrity, Chubby hands you a generous measure of Scotch. Pippa tells him of your recent successes at the Bank. Chubby's interest is aroused. He wishes to know more about the San Paulo project.
101 Lord Fish is suddenly very angry Pilgrim throws you out of the house.
102 Lord Fish reads what you have given him with interest, but asks if you have anything else on the San Paulo project.
103 Pilgrim enters the study. He informs his Lordship of an urgent phone call from Downing Street, where a cabinet meeting is about to take place. Chubby shakes you warmly by the hand.
104 As Chubby reads the new document his face lights up.
105 He tells you that Sir Lionel's days are now numbered. And since Sir Lionel's shabby treatment of the San Paulo workers will lose him his advisory post to the government, that the post is yours - along with an automatic knighthood!
106 Pilgrim enters. He reminds Lord Fish that he is urgently required at a Cabinet meeting. Chubby leaves you with a firm handshake and best wishes for your happy future.
107 You are hurtling at speed up the M11 towards Cambridge.
108 Your car has begun to splutter alarmingly...
109 You have reached a lay-by seven miles from Bishops Stortford.
110 You have run out of petrol. You will never attain HAMPSTEAD without transport.
111 Pippa is only interested in your social status and possessions. Get to the point!
112 Within easy reach...
113 You can't wear your tracksuit over your business suit - dummy!
114 Underneath the park bench you find a CREDIT CARD
115 The gate is closed.
116 My Dear Thrumm, This chap was with me in the Socrates Society in '51. Do you think could find a niche for him? Yours fraternally, Chesterfield.
117 You are already driving it.
118You can't go in that direction. But you can hear the sound of clinking glasses and shrieks of laughter from a nearby private party.
119(No entry)
120 How can I be expected to hear you with that thing on?
